A blog devoted to the cards I make in my tiny upstairs space. When my sister stays there, she calls it an "artist's garret". I'm not an artist, but am an enthusiastic cardmaker - hence the title "Cardmaker's Garret".

Cozy Winter and Santa Horses

Time Out's new challenge is "Cozy" and Shopping our Stash's challenge is "Time for a Hot Drink".

I love that sentiment - as much as I love summer and my garden, I also love being curled up with a blanket, a book, and, in my case, a cup of tea.

Stamped and coloured with coloured pencils, trimmed, popped up on fun foam on a wintery dp background.

And a second card, this one for Color Hues "Red and Black".

The horses are stamped in black and left uncoloured except for using a red Tombow marker to colour their Santa hats.  It's trimmed with a stitched rectangle die and bordered in red cs.  I added Fun Flock to the brims and pompom of the hats, and a thin line of glitter on the snowy top of the fence.

Mood Board Dog

For the new Peace on Earth challenge, I was inspired by the upper left image of the dog on the mood board (see it below).  It instantly reminded me of a stamp I've had for a few years but haven't inked up recently.

I stamped it, then watercoloured using my Inktense watercolour pencils.  I trimmed the panel and bordered it with a snowy dp.  I added glitter to the snowflakes and Fun Flock to the hat's brim and pompom.

Please come and join us at Peace on Earth Challenge.  We're an "anything Christmas goes" challenge if the mood board doesn't inspire you in some way.

I did another version of the same image, using different colours, different dp, and trimming the image panel smaller.

Ink - Versafine Clair Nocturne
Paper - watercolour paper, snowy dp, cream cs

Rainy Day Christmas Cards

It's supposed to be gardening season but it's a horrible wet day - the forecast says 100% chance of rain all day.  So what better to do than make Christmas cards!

For 52 Christmas Card Throwdown "Children's Xmas", I thought these sweet friends watching out the window for Santa were perfect:

A very simple stamped, watercoloured, bordered with navy, and popped up on fun foam on the card base. I added some snowflakes with a white gel pen.

I love these Colorado Craft Co. images by the artist Anita Jeram!  I've treated myself to a few of them recently.

Next up for Just Us Girls "Red, Black, White" and for We Love Stamping "Favourite Stamp", I chose my all-time favourite Christmas stamp.  Most of you know I love horses so of courseI love this stamp - so much so, I bought an extra one in case this one wears out!

Stamped in black, the hats coloured with a red marker, trimmed with a stitched rectangle die, popped up on fun foam, and Fun Flock added to the brims and pompoms on the hats, and added glitter to the fence line.

And finally for Jingle Belles "Earth Day" (recycle, re-use, up-cycle something), I took a tree off of the Christmas card I received from Julia of createwithjulia and used it on this card:

I found a piece of smooshed green background in my UFO box, stamped the Christmas text stamp on it, mounted it on a white card base, added Julia's Christmas tree to the centre and framed it with a white double-stacked frame die cut.

Cozy Pup

For the Penny Black Saturday Challenge "Something New":

A new stamp set (new to me, not sure how new it is for Penny Black) full of the wonderful PB critters.  A simple card, stamped, watercoloured, trimmed, with a thin red inlaid border, and a bit of fun flock added to the hat.

The image reminds me of my dog, Tessa, curled up in her dog bed "guarding" one of my socks that she loves to steal.

Here's a photo of her:

Gratitude and Two Horses

I can't believe how quickly September has passed by!  So I'm posting today for two challenges that are going to close soon.

First up, The Day of the Month card challenge is celebrating World Gratitude Day.

I used blues, greens, and yellows Distress inks for my tissue paper background, following this tutorial on SCS done by my good friend, Loll Thompson.  I ran a piece of white cs through a flowery embossing folder.   I then die cut a stitched oval window out of the panel.  The tissue paper background was set behind the window and a die cut "thanks" mounted on it.

Next up is a card for the ABC Christmas Challenge "T for Two".  I used one of my favourite stamps of two horses wearing Santa hats.

I stamped the horses in black and the sentiment in red, added fun flock to the Santa hats and glitter to the top of the fence, bordered the panel with red, and popped it up on fun foam.

I'm also adding it to September Rudolph Days (anything goes Christmas).

Thanks for stopping by!  I might be back tomorrow as I try to get a few more September challenges done!

A Rainbow of Spaniels and Santa Hats

It's time to remind you about April's CAS Christmas challenge, "Rainbow".  I've done a rainbow of spaniels wearing Santa hats.

English Cocker spaniels come in a huge range of colours - 23 different colours or colour mixes in fact!!  I've had three different ones - a blue roan, a liver roan, and my present sweet Tessa who is orange roan.  So I coloured the dogs on my card in a variety of colours.

And for the rainbow challenge, I did their hats and little gifts in the traditional rainbow of colours.  And then added those colours below them to ground them.

A simple sentiment and a black border, a bit of fun foam to add dimension, and the card was done.

Please come and join us with your Christmas card using "rainbow" as the theme - you have until April 24th to link up.  There is more inspiration from the Design Team over at CAS Christmas.

I'm also linking up with:

Day of the Month Card Club's challenge "Find a Rainbow Day".

Penny Black Saturday Challenge "Cute".

Dogs Running on Ribbon

I'm back with a reminder card for the Penny Black Saturday Challenge - I'm thrilled to be their Guest Designer this month.  It's Anything Goes - Optional "Use Ribbon or Twine".  So I opted to use ribbon as a way to ground my parade of Christmas dogs.

A quick CAS card!  Stamped, watercoloured, a strip of paw print ribbon to ground the pups, and a border of black die cut on the top with the sentiment die.

Thank you, Penny Black Saturday Challenge, for inviting me to Guest Design this month!

I'm also linking up with the Color Throwdown.  They want red, black, grey, and white.

A Rainbow of Spaniels

Time to remind you to create a card for CAS Watercolour using this month's theme:

Many of you know that I have two English Cocker Spaniels but I bet few of you know that English Cockers come in a wide spectrum of colours, probably more than any other breed - there are over 20 colours allowed under kennel club breed standards.  Breeders often talk about the rainbow of English Cocker colours.  So a stamp that features them seems appropriate for a rainbow challenge.

I stamped on hot press watercolour paper and watercoloured with Gansai Tambi paints.  There were enough Santa hats, gifts, balloon, etc. that I could get all the colours of the rainbow in there.  Then I decided to repeat the rainbow under them to ground them.

I added a sentiment featuring the word "merry" since the English Cocker has historically been referred to as the "merry cocker" due to their happy playful personality.

I added a very thin black border and popped it up on fun foam on a rustic cream cardbase.  I went over the pompoms and brims of the hats with a Quickie glue pen and added glitter.  Here's a close-up:

Please come on over to CAS Watercolour and check out the rest of the inspiration from the Design Team and our Guest Designer, Hannelie of the Desert Diva blog.  You have until May 24th to link up a clean and simple card that uses a rainbow of some sort.

Supplies:
Stamps - Penny Black dogs and sentiment
Ink - Ranger Archival Jet Black
Paper - hot press watercolour paper, PTI rustic cream cs, black cs
Size - 6.25x3.25"
Accessories - Gansai Tambi watercolour paints, glitter, fun foam

A Dog in a Santa Hat

The new Merry Monday Christmas Card challenge is "Santa Hat".

I went with a dog with a Santa hat just like the cute pup in their image.

The dog and the Santa hat are stamped and coloured with coloured pencils and Gamsol for blending. They were then fussy cut.

I stamped the sentiment on the lower part of a panel of white cs and dry embossed just the upper part. Then wrapped the ribbon around it.

The dog's paws are taped directly to the ribbon but his body and hat are popped up with foam tape.

I added Flower Soft to the hat brim and pom-pom.

Supplies:
Stamps - Tim Holtz dog and hat, Stampabilities sentiment
Ink - Memento Tuxedo Black
Paper - white and red cs
Size - A2
Accessories - plaid ribbon, Sizzix embossing folder, coloured pencils, Gamsol, white Flower Soft, foam tape

Friends

The current Addicted to CAS challenge is:

I'm in the mood to make Christmas cards so pulled out one of my favourite Christmas images for this card:

Don't these two horses look like the best of friends?  I ride and volunteer with therapeutic riding so I've definitely noticed how some horses have a real bond with each other.  And they are herd animals so definitely have to have other horses around for company.

It's a nice quick card - stamped in black with just the Santa hats coloured and a bit of glitter added to the snow on the fence and the hat brims and pompom.  It's cut with an oval and mounted on an embossed background for texture.

Thanks for dropping by!

Supplies:
Stamps - Impression Obsession Santa Horses
Ink - Ranger Archival Jet Black

A Rainbow of Santa Hats

This week's Merry Monday Christmas Card Challenge is "Colours of the Rainbow".

I inked up my Penny Black stamp of happy little dogs all wearing Santa hats and coloured the hats with Copic markers.  I used the same colour for any of the dogs' collars or gifts.  I then coloured the dogs bodies with coloured pencils so that they weren't as strongly coloured at the hats, etc.  There's a faint shading of snowy ground under their feet.  I then fussy cut along the top edge.

I had a scrap of dp that matched the shading I did for the snowy ground so used that for the background.  I die cut the sentiment twice and glued them together.  The image of the dogs is taped flush to the bottom of the dp, but there is foam tape under the dogs' hats to pop them up a bit.

I'm also adding it to the SCS Free for All challenge "Puppy Love".

Supplies:

Stamps: Penny Black
Paper: white cs, unknown scrap of dp
Paper Size: A2
Ink: Memento Tuxedo Black
Accessories: coloured pencils, Copic markers, Tim Holtz merry & bright die cut, foam tape
