A blog devoted to the cards I make in my tiny upstairs space. When my sister stays there, she calls it an "artist's garret". I'm not an artist, but am an enthusiastic cardmaker - hence the title "Cardmaker's Garret".

Christmas Dog on a Bicycle

Jingle Belles challenge wants us to "Feature a Creature".  Here's my card:

I stamped and watercoloured and added it to a cream card base. Instead of stamping a sentiment, I used a TH peel-off.

Holly with a Robin

I got out a stamp I haven't used yet and inked it up for this Christmas card:

I stamped the stamp with Fadeout No-Line ink so that I could have a better idea of the image, then coloured directly on the stamp with Tombow markers, one colour at a time and spritzing lightly with water after each one.  I did the text stamping and background sponging with Distress Antique Linen and Vintage Photo, and added a sentiment in brown.  I popped the panel up on fun foam.

The method I used for the text stamping is in this video - inking up the stamp, spritzing it, laying it on my work surface rubber side up, and pressing the panel onto the stamp lightly, avoiding the image as much as possible.

In My Thoughts

I've got a card today that uses my Cosmic Shimmer Botanical Stains for watercolouring the flowers.  I bought them because I loved their old-fashioned vintage kind of colours but I need more practice with them to get the paler faded look I wanted.

I added a bit of splatter and a sentiment, bordered with black, and popped it up on fun foam.

It's for:

Pink Christmas

I always like to enter the Jingle Belles "Pink Christmas" challenge as they donate money to breast cancer research for each card that's entered.  I'm really squeaking in under the wire this time as the challenge is about to close.

I found a piece of background I'd sprinkled with pink Magicals (and then spritzed with water) in my UFO box and thought it was perfect for a poinsettia die cut.  It worked well for a mini slimline.  I heat embossed the sentiment in pink, added a narrow strip of the Magicals piece to balance out the panel, popped it up on fun foam on the card base, and added sparkly pink embellishments.

Jingle Belles

I'm also adding it to the Christmas Kickstart Challenge "Poinsettias and Posies".

And ABC Christmas Challenge "U for Unusual Christmas Colours"

In Front of the Fireplace

Peace on Earth has a mood board for this challenge that has a couple of images of fireplaces with lovely red and green greenery swags around them.  They made me think of a Penny Black stamp I have so I used it for this card:

The image is watercoloured and bordered with a Christmas dp.  I added a bit of Fun Flock to the dog's and cat's hats.

Here's the Peace on Earth Challenge's mood board that inspired me:

Come and join us at Peace on Earth with either a card inspired by the mood board or an "anything Christmas goes" card.  Check out the inspiration from the rest of our Design Team!

Autumn Birthday

I'm on the Design Team of Diane and Darlene's Peace on Earth Challenge and I try to participate in some of their other challenges.  I needed a birthday card for a friend with an October birthday so it seemed a perfect opportunity to make something with an autumn theme and enter it in their Four Seasons Challenge - "anything fall goes".

I used autumn leaves, berries, and colours.  I followed a recent SCS tutorial on "Double Stamped Vellum"I did the white embossed leaves on the front of the vellum, then the coloured leaves and berries on the back.

I layered the vellum on the back of an aperture cut out of my stitched die cut rectangle and then added foam tape to the back of it to give it some dimension on the card base.

Four Seasons Challenge (I used the red and orange tones from the bottom right image on the mood board).

Supplies:
Stamps - Penny Black leaves and berries, SU sentiment
Ink - SU Real Red, Distress Rusty Hinge, ColorBox white
Paper - white cs, vellum
Size - A2
Accessories - white embossing powder, foam tape, Lil Inker stitched rectangle die, Spellbinders rectangle die

Winter Recreation for Animal Friends

Christmas Cards All Year Round wants to see Winter Sports / Recreation.  I love this stamp I chose depicting animal friends having fun with their sled.  At the barn where I ride, we have a couple of horses who are quite willing to tow a sled in the winter - one person rides the horse, another sits on the sled - it's a lot of fun!

I stamped and watercoloured the image, trimmed it with a hemstitch die, added it to a shimmery copper card base, added a few small glittery die cut snowflakes, and went over the snow lines on the ground with a glue pen and glitter.

Christmas Cards All Year Round often uses the image of a fantastic cake for inspiration for its theme.  This month's is no exception:

Supplies:
Stamps - Craft Emotions sledding, Penny Black sentiment
Ink - Versafine Onyx Black
Paper - watercolour paper, shimmery copper cs, white glitter cs
Size - A2
Accessories - watercolour paints, tiny snowflake dies, Spellbinder hemstitch rectangle, glitter

Greenery and Ribbon

Christmas Craft Creations wants to see Ribbon or Twine on a Christmas card.  I used ribbon for a bow for my swag of greenery:

I had some scraps of cs that I'd sprayed with various green sprays leftover from another project, so I die cut some branches out of them.

I die cut the "Merry Christmas" frame from white cs and layered another scrap of the sprayed green cs behind the word Christmas. I layered it over a scrap of snowflake embossed white cs, using foam tape to give it some dimension. Then arranged the branches on top and added a red bow.

Since I used up a bunch of scraps, I'm also linking it up with the Snippets Challenge.

Snowy Trees

The ABC Christmas Challenge wants to see S for Snow and T for Trees.  Here's my card:

I created a background by sprinkling various blue Brushos on my craft mat and spritzing with water, then pouncing mixed media cs into it till I was happy with the result. I let it dry then splattered a bit of white gesso on it for snow in the sky. Added a die cut white tree line, sentiment, and a gold star and popped the panel up on fun foam for dimension.

Inspired Snowflake

Inspired by the Peace on Earth mood board (see below), I created this card:

I started by using gesso to stencil the snowflake on black cs to create a resist for my stamping, then stamped the text background stamp over it.  I replaced the snowflake stencil and sponged Distress Speckled Egg ink over it to add colour to the snowflake.  Popped the panel up on fun foam on an icy blue card base and added a die cut sentiment.

Here's the Peace on Earth mood board.  I wanted to capture the single snowflake and the black and icy blue/grey colours of the top right image.

Please come and join us at Peace on Earth.  You can enter an "anything Christmas" card or you can be inspired by the mood board.  There's lots more inspiration from the rest of the Design Team!

Supplies:
Stamps - unknown text / snowflake background stamp
Ink - Distress Speckled Egg
Paper - black and icy blue cs
Size - 4.75" square
Accessories - snowflake stencil, gesso, fun foam, Spellbinders Noel die
