A blog devoted to the cards I make in my tiny upstairs space. When my sister stays there, she calls it an "artist's garret". I'm not an artist, but am an enthusiastic cardmaker - hence the title "Cardmaker's Garret".

A Day of "Quilting"

We had a ton of rain yesterday so I holed up in the craftroom and pulled out my quilt die and a bunch of scraps of patterned paper that were at least 4" square and ended up with four cards.  It was great fun mixing and matching the patterned paper, the colours of the outer part of the "quilt", and the colours of the card bases.  Here are the four variations:

Making these involved running the die eight times - one for each of the four different patterned papers and one for each of the border colours.

For each quilt, I cut a square from a sheet of double-sided sookwang tape and stuck it on a square of scrap cs, placed the outline borders on it, and then inset the little patterned pieces.  I did it with fine pointed tweezers - easier than using my fingers!

Added the quilts to the card bases, and then for the first two, I created a tiny tag from an old tag punch for the sentiment stuck it on the centre of the quilt and embellished with a tiny adhesive pearl, and for the last two, I die cut sentiments to match the card bases.

They are going to the following challenges:

Christmas Challenges All Year Round "For a Female" - I have a couple of girlfriends who do quilting so these cards will go to them.

Sweet Stampin' Challenge "Tags" - the ones with the tags on sentiments

My Time to Craft Challenge - "Two or More Patterned Papers"

Rudolph Days "anything Christmas"

Snippets Playground - lots of scraps of patterned paper, white, red, cream, and green cs

Q is for Quilt

A rainy day is a good time to make a really fiddly time-consuming card!  Fitting in all the little pieces of decorative paper for a quilt design definitely qualifies for fiddly!  But it's perfect for the Christmas Cards All Year Round challenge "Something that Starts with Q or R".  So here's my "Q is for Quilt" card:

I used my Gina Marie quilt die, cutting it three times out of various dp. I then stuck the border down on a sheet of double sided tape, trimmed around the edge, and filled in the pattern with the pieces from two of the other dps. I'll have to make two more to use up all the dp pieces!

Popped it up on fun foam and added a sentiment.

I feel like I'm finally inspired to work on Christmas cards!  So you'll be seeing lots of them in the weeks to come!

Supplies:
Stamps - Rubber Soul sentiment
Ink - Memento Rhubarb Stalk
Paper - cream cs, various dp
Size - 5x5.25"
Accessories - Gina Marie quilt die, fun foam, sheet of double sided tape

Quilting with Spruce and Merlot

This is week three of my four weeks as Guest Designer at the SCS Color Challenge.  This week the challenge is "Vanilla Merlot under the Shaded Spruce".

I don't have the Stampin Up inks or papers that the challenge is based on so I have to come as close as I can.  Here's my card:

I am having so much fun with my new Gina Marie quilt die and I had some perfect dp languishing in a drawer. I die cut three times - once out of ivory cs, and once out of each of two different dps.

I used the ivory outline and stuck it onto double sided tape. Then carefully added the tiny pieces from the two different dps - one of them was double-sided so I flipped a few of its bits over to use the reverse pattern.

I popped the quilt up on fun foam on a dark red cardbase and die cut "joy" out of the same dark red cs.

Supplies:
Paper - dark red cs, Gina K Pure Ivory cs, various dp
Size - 5.25" square
Accessories - Gina Marie quilt die, Tim Holtz joy die, fun foam, sheet of double sided tape

Practicing my Paper Quilting

Today's SCS CAS and Technique Lovers' challenges inspired me to try making another "quilt" card.

The CAS Challenge is "to Grandma's house we go!" - to make a card that reminds you of your grandmother's house.  My grandmother was a real craftswoman - knitting, sewing, quilting, embroidery - she was never idle, even when we were visiting.

The Technique Lovers' Challenge is to chose a technique we either love, missed out on trying, or want more practice on, and when doing it, CASE either one of your own cards or someone else's.   I've always meant to try making another quilt card. I only ever made this one here.  I did that one a few years ago and was never that happy with my choice of papers, and I didn't like having the sentiment cover so much of it, and it was a bit sloppy with gaps between the pieces of dp.

I'm much happier with this version - love these two patterned papers together, and I did a better job of placing the pieces. I also prefer my smaller sentiment. I stamped it on a tiny tag and attached it with a bit of twine and an old button - both of which make me think of my grandmother as, having gone through the war in England, she saved all her old buttons and bits of string in jars on the kitchen counter!

Thanks to the CAS challenge for making me think of my grandmother - she died quite a while ago at the ripe old age of 101 so I have many memories of her over many years.
