A blog devoted to the cards I make in my tiny upstairs space. When my sister stays there, she calls it an "artist's garret". I'm not an artist, but am an enthusiastic cardmaker - hence the title "Cardmaker's Garret".

A Sympathy Card with a Horse and a Dog Sympathy Card

The Cut It Up challenge wants to see die cuts of critters.  I still had this horse die out on my desk as I made a card from it a few weeks ago but this time I gave it a very different treatment.

My sister asked me to make a sympathy card for her riding coach whose father suddenly passed away. She wanted a horse on it. So I thought I could make a night sky to go with the sentiment I used as it talks about stars. I created the sky by smooshing with dark blue Distress inks. Then stamped the sentiment over it in black. I layered the die cut over it, popped it up on fun foam, and added some die cut gold stars.

My other card today is for Try It On Tuesday "Add Some Text".

I stamped and fussy cut the dog. The sentiment is stamped and cut with a narrow rectangle die, and then sponged around the edge. I created a background with a mixture of stencilling, text stamping, watercolouring, and sponging.

Sympathy Card Using Generation Stamping with a Very Old Stamp

I'm part of the Group of Seven design team but shamefully failed to get my card done in time for their newest post.  I do have a good excuse - my sister and brother-in-law were visiting and we did a lot of work around my house and garden.  I had to make the most of the help while I had it.  My wonderful brother-in-law is the ultimate handyman and excellent gardener, and my sister is an amazing organizer and de-clutterer (though she refused to help me organize my craft room.

They've left now so I have crafty time again.  Sadly my dear friends just had to let their very old beloved black lab go so I decided to use this month's Group of Seven technique of "generation stamping" to make a sympathy card for them.

I created a background with the letterpress technique of rubbing black ink over the raised part of the paw print embossing folder and then running it through my Cuttlebug.

The focal panel is the dog stamp inked up once and then stamped three times in a row going off the edge of the panel as if it was the dog gently fading out of life.

I'm also adding the card to Stamping Sensations "Our Furry Friends", Can You Handle the Pressure? (Dog or Cat - I used my embossing folder for the letterpress technique), and The Neglected Stuff Challenge (this Stampin' Up set is many years old and I rarely use it).

For more ideas on using the generation stamping technique, head over to Group of Seven and feel free to give it a try and post your results.

Primary Red, CAS Sympathy

Shopping our Stash wants red as the primary colour on a card.

I stamped the cat image, die cut the Merry Christmas frame out of red cs and layered it over the image, then trimmed the panel to leave a border outside of the red frame, and then bordered all of that with more red.

Simply Clean and Simple have "Flower" as their theme.  I made a sympathy card to have on hand.

I die cut a circle out of scrap paper for a mask, laid it over my card base, stamped the flowers in purple and then sponged over the whole circle. I die cut the flower three times and glued them together, then very lightly sponged it with lavender.

A Masculine CAS Card and a Sympathy Card

A few of the challenges I enjoy are asking for masculine cards:  Sweet Stampin' "Masculine Makes", 52 Christmas Card Countdown "Masculine Christmas", and The Paper Players "Masculine Clean and Simple".

Using a brick wall stencil, I went over it with a rough mixture of black, copper, and white embossing paste. It came out way to dark and too shiny so I then sponged white gesso over it to lighten it and dull it down a bit. I also splattered a bit of the white gesso on it and then trimmed it with a square die. I popped it up on the card base with fun foam.

I stamped the sentiment in grey and trimmed it with a narrow strip die sentiment. I die cut the wreath twice out of scrap cs and once out of off white shimmer cs, glued them together and added it to the brick wall.

For my second card today, I needed to make a sympathy card so used Can You Handle the Pressure's "Something Starting with F".  I went with a floral embossing folder and a flower for my focal image.

I inked up the stamp with Tombow markers, trimmed the panel with a stitched rectangle die, popped it up on fun foam on a background embossed with a floral folder, and added a drop of yellow Liquid Pearls to the centre of the flower.

Blue with Dove and Starry Sympathy

Many of you know I love blue so I'm thrilled to see these two challenges - Addicted to CAS "Code Word Blue" and Try It on Tuesday "Feeling Blue".  And AAA Cards wants a CAS card with something that flies in the air.

I roughly painted a paneil with a couple of shades of blue acrylic paint and then stamped and heat embossed my dove in white.  I trimmed the panel with a hemstitch square die and mounted it on a white card base.

My Time to Craft wants to see a sentiment - I went with the sentiment being a major part of the card.  It's also perfect for Word Power where the sentiment has to be the focus of the card.

I stamped my sentiment in black and then lightly stencilled some stars over and around it.  Trimmed the panel and popped it up on fun foam of a dull gold shimmer card base.

One of Many Birds and Monochrome Sympathy

Shopping our Stash is asking to see our birds - and boy, do I have a lot of bird stamps!!  For this card, I used one of my older ones that is still a favourite.  I'm also adding it to the Inkspirational challenge "Seasonal".

A very CAS card and quick to make - stamped, watercoloured the berries dark red, trimmed with a stitched rectangle, bordered with dark red, popped up on fun foam, and Glossy Accents added to the berries.

And for My Time to Craft "Monochrome":

I masked off a rectangle on my focal panel and sponged from three corners first with the lighter ink, then the darker. I stamped the leaves and text with second generation stamping, and then stamped the sentiment with full strength ink.  It's popped up on fun foam on an embossed background.

Leafy Sympathy and Christmas Dog

A sympathy / thinking of you card that is for Can You Handle the Pressure (Leaves), AAA Card Challenge (Sympathy or Get Well), and My Time to Craft (something tree-related, which of course, leaves are).

I used a leafy embossing folder for my background and an oval die cut for the sentiment that both cuts and dry embosses.  For the focal image, I stamped the leaves in two different shades of green, trimmed the panel and popped it up on fun foam.

I can't do a post at this time of year without including a Christmas card.  For Inkspirational (CAS with an Animal).

A simple stamped and watercoloured image, bordered with black, and on a mini slimline red card base.

Stencilled Birthday and Starry Sympathy

A birthday card for my nephew using the Stencil Fun "Birthdays" challenge and the Cardz 4 Guyz "Anything Masculine Goes" challenge.

I made a globe stencil using my globe die and laid it down on white cs and sprayed over it with a couple of different brown sprays.  When dry, I stamped a sentiment on top of it.  Stamped the vertical Happy Birthday on another strip of cs and added both to a black panel.

The Double D challenge wants stars and Word Power wants the sentiment to be the focus of the card.

I stencilled the stars in gold ink so that they would curve around the sentiment, trimmed with a square die, bordered in dull gold shimmer cs, and popped it up on the card base with fun foam.
