Icy Snowflakes

I'm trying a challenge I've never entered before - The Funkie Junkie challenge.  The current one is "Icy and Cold" and seemed perfect as I needed to make a thank you card for my neighbours who did all my snow shovelling for me during our recent snowfalls (for health reasons, I'm not allowed to do any snow shovelling).  Here's the card I made for them:

I started by laying a snowflake mask down on mixed media cs and sparayed with various blue, grey, and silver sprays.  Once that was dry, I laid a snowflake stencil over it and used a glittery paste through it.  Trimmed it, popped it up on fun foam, die cut "thanks" in black and its shadow die in white, and stamped "just a note of" on a scrap of white cs.

It's quite outside of my usual style but I'm really happy with the results.  And it definitely looks icy and cold to me!

Layered Stencils

I'm very last minute for the CAS Stencil "Layered Stenciling" challenge!


Christine and I did some physically distanced crafting on Wednesday and she helped me with two new techniques - stenciling with a gelli plate and creating a brayered background, both techniques using Fresco Chalk paints - I like them much better than standard acrylic paints.

First up the stenciled one, using the colours from the Color Throwdown Challenge:




 
I brayered yellow Fresco Chalk paint onto a gelli plate, laid the swirly flower stencil over it, then pressed copy paper over top, picking up the yellow paint.  I then laid a text stencil over it and sponged with grey Distress ink.

I added it to cs using a sheet of double sided tape, then trimmed it, and bordered with a thin grey border.  I added it to white shimmer card base.

I die cut the flower spray die twice from white cs and once from the white shimmer cs I used for the card base.  I glued the three together with the shimmer layer on top.  Then added a sentiment stamped in grey on the white shimmer cs and trimmed.  And for embellishment, two yellow pearl gemstones on the two largest flowers.


Then I used the technique seen in this video for the background piece in this card:

Using a brayer and a few shades of blue Fresco Chalk paint, I rolled (with a flicking random motion) the colours one at a time on mixed media cs.  I then sponged white paint over a snowflake stencil.  Once it was dry, I stencilled the word Peace over it with Distress Black Soot ink.

I trimmed the panel, added a very thin black cs border, and finished off the sentiment by stamping "on earth" from a TH "peace on earth" sentiment onto black cs and heat embossing it in white.

Stars for Peace

Mid-month reminder time for CAS Mix Up!

I did something quite different to my first Design Team CAS Mix Up card (see here).

Instead of just layering of whole bunch of stencils on top of each other with ink, I started with a "Peace in a Star" stencil that Loll Thompson made for me on her Silhouette.  It looks like a die cut on the card, but is actually a stencil made out of acetate.  I added little bits of removable glue runner to hold it on the cs, then using a Clarity brush, I went over it with Distress Oxide Antique Linen and Fossilized Amber.

I left it in place and laid the Simon Says Stamp "Falling Stars" (the small stars) stencil over top of it and went over it with a finger dauber and Delicata Golden Glitz ink.

I removed the "Falling Stars" stencil and replaced it with the TCW "Random Stars" (the three larger stars) stencil and chose three strategically place stars and put Dreamweaver Gold embossing paste through them.  I removed it and the "Peace in a Star" stencil and let everything dry.  Once dry, I stamped "on earth" below the star (masking off the word "peace" on the stamp).

Trimmed the panel and popped it up on fun foam.

I have stamping, stencil layering, and for my choice, embossing paste.

CAS Mix Up Layered Stencils

It's time for another great challenge at CAS Mix Up.  This month, Design Team member Julia Aston (of the Create with Julia blog) has come up with a stenciling challenge:

I made a small piece of layered stencils, added a stamped sentiment, and chose dry embossing as my choice.

I smooshed a piece of mixed media cs with Fossilized Amber Oxide ink, added a bit of Iced Spruce and flicked on a bit of water.  Then I stenciled some random patches of the TH Burlap stencil with Spiced Marmalade, some TH Gears stencil with Vintage Photo, and then the word "Time" from the TCW Word Association stencil with Iced Spruce.

I created a background layer by stamping the "birthday wishes" sentiment, and then running it through a distress-style embossing folder.  I trimmed the stenciled panel down and mounted it on the background which I popped up on fun foam.
