A blog devoted to the cards I make in my tiny upstairs space. When my sister stays there, she calls it an "artist's garret". I'm not an artist, but am an enthusiastic cardmaker - hence the title "Cardmaker's Garret".

Aqua and Silver

As soon as I saw the Peace on Earth mood board (see at end of post), I was drawn to the bottom right image of the aqua-coloured ornaments with some silver in the background.  Here's my card:

I die cut the ornament three times, once out of aqua glitter cs and twice out of scrap cs.  I glued them together, threaded both aqua bakers twine and silver cord through the hole, then glued it to a silver matte card base.  I die cut the sentiment and glued it to the card base.

We'd love to have you join us with either a card inspired by the mood board or an "anything Christmas" card.  There's lots more inspiration from the Design Team over at Peace on Earth.  Here's our mood board:

Supplies:
Paper - silver matte cs, aqua glitter cs

Sleigh Ride on Music

The bottom right image on the new Peace on Earth mood board immediately gave me the idea for this card.

I had a perfect piece of patterned paper for the background.  I put it in my MISTI and stamped the silhouette sleigh image a few times directly onto the patterned paper until I got a perfect impression, then heat embossed it.  I went around the edges of the panel with a black marker.  I stamped and heat embossed the sentiment, sponged a bit of Antique Linen ink on it to give it the same slightly aged look as the patterned paper, and also went around the edges of it with a black marker.

We'd love to have you join us at Peace on Earth, either inspired by the mood board below, or with an "anything Christmas" card.

I'm also entering the card at the Jingle Belles' "Vintage" challenge.

Red House in the Woods

For Peace on Earth's new challenge, I was inspired by the bottom left image in their mood board (see it at the end of my post).

I kept the background white and completely clean like the image in the mood board.  I die cut the house and trees die out of watercolour paper, then painted the trees and house with Distress inks.  I stamped the sentiment with Fired Brick (the same red as the house) and die cut it with a stitched sentiment banner.  Both dies were also cut out of scrap cs and doubled up to give more dimension.

Here's the Peace on Earth mood board.  To see what the rest of the Design Team was inspired to create, head over to Peace on Earth.  If the mood board doesn't inspire you, you're welcome to link up an "anything Christmas" card.

I'm also linking it up Sparkles Christmas Challenge "Include a Tree".

Snowman in Joy

The new Peace on Earth mood board consists of four images of snowmen, all wearing scarves and hats.  I pulled out an old snowman stamp that would fit inside the letter "o" of my large "Joy" die.  I also wanted to use some dp as a background - I'm on a mission to try and use dp on at least two cards a month!  I have to make a dent in my stash!!

I stamped the snowman and sentiment in grey ink and did a bit of colouring with coloured pencils.  The snowman stamp includes some snowflakes around the snowman but I needed to add a bit more snow to fill in the circle so I used an old peg stamp of random dots.

I die cut the "Joy" once out of matte silver cs and once out of scrap cs and glued the two together.  I trimmed the snowman panel to fit behind the "o".  Then added the whole thing to the snowy dp background.  I went over all the snowflakes and dots with a Clear Star gelly roll pen and added some fun flock to the hat brim, pompom, and mitts' cuffs.

There's lots of other ideas from the rest of our Peace on Earth Design Team.  We'd love to see if our mood board inspires you or if you just want to do an "anything Christmas" card.

I'm also linking this card up with the Neglected Stuff Challenge as the snowman stamp is one of my very oldest stamps and hasn't been inked up for a long time.

Sparkling Blue Tree

Many of you know that blue is my favourite colour.  So when I saw the new Peace on Earth mood board, I was pretty happy.  I picked the top right image as it made me think of a new Lavinia stamp of a tree with gifts underneath it that I hadn't yet inked up.

I stamped it, then keeping with the colour scheme in the mood board, I used coloured pencils to add some colour to the gifts under the tree, trimmed the panel, bordered it with a dark shade of blue shimmer cs, mounted it on a dry embossed background, and added everything to a lighter shade of blue shimmer card base.

Then the fun started - I added many tiny and small gemstones in a few shades of blue to the blank circles on the tree and many tiny stick-on shimmery stars to the blank stars on the tree

Here's a close up of the tree with the gemstones and stick-on stars:

Here's the Peace on Earth mood board that inspired me:

We'd love to see cards from you either inspired by our mood board or "anything Christmas".

It's a stamp I hadn't inked up before so I'm linking it up over at the NBUS Challenge as well.

I'm also entering it at the Sparkles Christmas Challenge where this month's challenge is "sparkle & bling".  I have lots of that with the sparkly stick-on stars and the gemstones!

Non-traditional Forest for Peace on Earth

Peace on Earth's new mood board inspired me to step outside my comfort zone and go with very non-traditional colours.  I chose the top right hand picture of the non-traditional coloured Christmas tree decorations.  And the little turquoise reindeer on the right hand side of that image inspired the reindeer in my card.

I smooshed a bunch of scraps of mixed media cs in colours close to the mood board image.  Then die cut the trees from them.  I arranged them on the card base and layered the reindeer circle die cut over them.

There's lots of other inspiration from our Peace on Earth design team.  We'd love to have you join us.

Peace on Earth Cat in a Hat

I was searching through my stamps for a cat wearing a Santa hat to go with our Peace on Earth mood board.  The only one I found is this cat wearing a striped hat so I went with that.

The cat is watercoloured.  I made him a ginger cat so that I can send it to my nephew who has a ginger cat and who will enjoy the image of the hat falling over the cat's eyes.  I have a goal this year to make at least two cards a month that use up some of my stash of dp so now I've got one done for this month!!

I've never used the cat stamp before so I'm also linking up with NBUS Challenge.  And also with Jingle Belles "Animal Antics".

We've got lots of inspiration over at Peace on Earth from the rest of the Design Team as well as the four images in our mood board.  Please join us!

A Nutcracker

The new Peace on Earth mood board is full of nutcrackers.  I didn't have any nutcracker stamps or dies so I found a digital stamp to make this card.

It's coloured with coloured pencils that pick up the colours in the dp background featuring metallic holly leaves.

There's lots of other ideas from our Peace on Earth design team showing how they were inspired by the nutcrackers on the mood board.  We'd love to see your cards - and if like me, you don't have any nutcracker stamps or dies, feel free to make an anything Christmas card.

Ornaments for Peace on Earth

Time for another Peace on Earth challenge.  See the new mood board below.  I was inspired by the bottom left photo.

Quite a CAS card - the pine branch is cut from green shimmer cs, the ornaments from cream and yellow gold shimmer cs.  I used green cord to hang the ornaments from the pine branch, and an old SU punch set for the stamped sentiment.

Here's our mood board if you want to be inspired by it (but if not, we welcome any Christmas cards).  There's lots more inspiration from the rest of the Design Team over at Peace on Earth.

Supplies:
Stamps - Rubber Soul sentiment
Ink - Distress Mowed Lawn

Peace on Earth Non-Traditional Colours

This month, our Peace on Earth has a mood board full of non-traditional Christmas colours.  Definitely a challenge for me!  Here's what the mood board inspired me to create:

I stamped the tree, coloured all the tiny lights and ornaments on it with alcohol markers and Glossy Accents.  I then took my tiny snowflake stencil and a very small blending brush and stencilled the snowflakes in lots of different colours of Distress inks.

Here's the mood board that inspired it:

Does it inspire you to create a Christmas card in non-traditional colours?  If so, please join us at Peace on Earth.  If not, join us anyway with an anything goes Christmas card.  There's lots of other inspiration from the rest of our Design Team!

Supplies:
Stamps - unknown tree and sentiment
Ink - Distress Peacock Feathers, various mini Distress inks
Paper - white cs

Cats and Christmas

Anyone who has ever lived with a cat knows that they can create havoc at Christmas.  Somehow, Christmas trees, Christmas decorations, etc. seem to bring out the worst in them!  This month one of the images on the Peace on Earth mood board depicts exactly that.  It inspired me to make this card.

I stamped the image, then painted the stars and the Santa hat with Twinkling H2Os, and grounded the cat with a bit of grey watercolour paint.  Trimmed the panel with a square die, bordered it with a starry dp background, and added Fun Flock to the brim and pompom of the hat.

Here's the Peace on Earth mood board:

There's lots more interpretations of it over at Peace on Earth from the rest of our Design Team.  We'd love to have you join us!

Gnome with Stars

The new mood board at Peace on Earth is full of gnomes.  Since I don't own any gnome stamps, I broke down and bought a digi stamp!  Not really my cup of tea as I love real stamps but it's a cute image!

He's coloured with coloured pencils (including a metallic gold one for the stars), popped up on fun foam on the layer of dp, and embellished with Fun Flock on the brim of the hat, cuff of the glove, and beard.  I thought the "deck the halls" sentiment was perfect as he looks like he's dashing off to decorate with his string of stars.

Here's the mood board that inspired it:

Sled Against a Brick Wall

The new Peace on Earth challenge's mood board has an image of a sled leaning against a brick wall.  It inspired this card.

Using the Tim Holtz brick wall stencil, I sponged with Hickory Smoke and Pumice Stone Distress inks, then went over it with translucent embossing paste.  I trimmed the panel and tore a piece of white cs to create snowy ground.  I stamped the sentiment on it in dark green (and chose a sentiment with the word "believe" in it to go with the word on the sled in the inspiration photo).  I die cut a couple of pieces of greenery (inspired by the greenery on the sled in the photo) and put them on the top of the wall.  I used a white pearl pen to put the white berries on one of them.  The sled is die cut twice from scrap cs and once from a leftover bit of brown smooshed cs, all glued together to give it more dimension.

There's lots more inspiration from the rest of our Design Team over at Peace on Earth!  We'd love to have you join us!

Owl and Forest

Peace on Earth's new mood board has a beautiful image of a Snowy Owl so I was inspired to pull out a very old stamp and create this card.

In my first attempt, I stamped and heat embossed the owl in silver and then tried to stamp the trees around it but it just came out looking messy so I discarded it and started again.

I stamped and heat embossed the owl in silver on a small piece of white cs and trimmed it with a small rectangle die.  On a larger piece of white cs I stamped the snowy trees by tapping the stamp with two shades of green Distress ink.  I trimmed that panel with a square die and added it to my card base.  I popped the owl up on fun foam.  And stamped and heat embossed a sentiment in silver and trimmed with a stitched banner die.  It's not quite what I'd envisioned making but I feel I captured the owl and the snowy trees from the mood board.

We'd love to see what our mood board inspires you to make.  Head over to Peace on Earth for more inspiration from the rest of the Design Team.

Ink - ColorBox silver, Distress Pine Needles and Evergreen Bough

A Reindeer Framed by Hearts

When I saw our new mood board at Peace on Earth, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do.  At first I wanted to do a dove on a red heart but three of my fellow Design Team members had already done that.  So then I thought of a white tree with red ornaments but I wasn't inspired.  Then I had the idea of somehow merging the reindeer in the top left image with the red hearts in the other three images and came up with this card.

I've had this heart frame die for ages but never used it (so am also entering my card at the NBUS challenge).  It fit quite well around my collage-style stamp of the reindeer.  And I have an old SU sentiment that mentions both Christmas and hearts.

I put the reindeer stamp in my MISTI and tapped it with a couple of different brown inks to get a bit of variation in the stamping.  Stamped the sentiment below, trimmed and added to a red card base, and die cut the heart frame out of the same red as the card base.

We'd love to see if our Peace on Earth mood board inspires you.  If not, feel free to link up an "anything Christmas" card.
