A blog devoted to the cards I make in my tiny upstairs space. When my sister stays there, she calls it an "artist's garret". I'm not an artist, but am an enthusiastic cardmaker - hence the title "Cardmaker's Garret".

Three Wooden Snowflakes

December's AAA Cards challenge is:

And 52 Christmas Card Throwdown wants us to choose one of the 2017 challenges.  I had such a hard time chosing as there were lots of challenges that appealed to me so I chose two.  I posted the first one yesterday and now here's the second one from October 2017:

I went with three wooden snowflakes.

A very simple card with a rectangle of thin cork stuck to my card base, wooden snowflakes on top of it, and then a stamped vertical sentiment.

Has anyone heard how well these wooden snowflakes go through the mail?  They seem kind of fragile to me!

Supplies:
Stamps - Impression Obsession sentiment
Ink - Distress Oxide Vintage Photo
Paper - rustic white cs
Size - A2
Accessories - wooden snowflakes, thin cork

Canvas and Cork

Joanna, host of the February CAS Mix Up challenge is asking us to use felt, cork, or canvas on our cards.

I went with both canvas and cork on my reminder card.

I put a piece of canvas (thanks to my friend, Christine, for giving it to me) into my MISTI and stamped the Tim Holtz butterflies and moths stamps onto it, first with Archival ink and then with Versafine to try and get more of the details of the stamp.  No such luck - I think the texture of canvas will always defeat the details in a stamp.

To give you an idea of what I mean, here is how the stamp comes out with Archival ink on white cs - and I didn't even use the MISTI (just an acrylic block):

And here is a close up of my stamping on canvas where you can see how I've lost some of the detail of the butterflies and how the texture of the canvas shows in the stamping:

None the less, I went ahead with it, adding some subtle watercolouring to the butterflies and a bit of splatter with diluted black paint.

Next I took a piece of thin craft cork and stuck it to a scrap of cs with double-sided tape (I did this because my first attempt at making a cork frame did not work - the cork is quite flimsy and fragile, and it started to tear after I'd cut the frame).  Second time with the cs backing worked perfectly!  I used an old Spellbinders long rectangle die to cut out the centre of the frame.

I taped the frame to the butterflies and then onto a linen card base.  I decided to leave it without a sentiment as it keeps it more CAS.  I'll add one inside the card when I decide what occasion I'll use it for.

You have until February 24th to link up your clean and simple card, using felt, cork, or canvas, some stamping, and at least one other choice - I used watercolouring, splattering, and die cutting.  Head on over to CAS Mix Up for some mid-month inspiration from the rest of the Design Team and our Guest Designer, Marianne (of Marianne's Cards 'n Stuff).

Cork with Wooden Snowflake

A new challenge from CAS Mix Up (and did I ever find this a challenge - took me ages to come up with an idea!):

I found some cork tags in a dollar store and decided to use one of those.  My first idea was a birthday card with a stamped sentiment and a small die cut on the tag, but then I remembered my old SU wooden snowflakes and I liked the idea of the combination of wood and cork.

My criteria for choosing a sentiment to stamp was that it fit the width of the tag and was a fairly thick / heavy font so that it would show up on the cork.  I found the perfect one, put it and the tag in my MISTI and stamped it a couple of times with StazOn ink until it was dark enough.

I used an embossing folder I've had for awhile but never used.  It's quite a neat one.  It both debosses and embosses at the same time - I really like the effect.  I embossed it on cream cs and layered over a kraft card base.

CAS Mix Up is open until February 24th for you to link up a card.  Please be sure that it is clean and simple, and that it includes felt, cork, or canvas, stamping, and one other thing of your choice - I have wood and dry embossing.   For inspiration, check out the cards by the rest of the Design Team and our February Guest Designer, Marianne (Marianne's Cards 'n stuff).
