A blog devoted to the cards I make in my tiny upstairs space. When my sister stays there, she calls it an "artist's garret". I'm not an artist, but am an enthusiastic cardmaker - hence the title "Cardmaker's Garret".

Gilded Ornament

We're on to the second challenge in Loll's and Bonnie's fabulous new challenge, CAS Christmas Card Challenge.  We were thrilled with the entries for "Holly" last month, so are looking forward to what we get for April:

I've gone with using gilding flakes and die cuts.

I sponged (using cut and dry foam) some Cosmic Shimmer glue on my stamp, getting a good even coating, then stamped on my cardstock. I immediately cleaned the stamp with some soapy water and a toothbrush. By the time I'd done that, the glue was tacky enough on the cs for the gilding flakes - added them, pushed them into the glue with my fingers, brushed off the excess, and then burnished with a piece of Tim Holtz Rub-It Scrub-It.

I then die cut the stamped image with a corresponding die and die cut a pine branch out of green shimmer cs.  I punched a tiny hole in the top of the ornament and tied it to the branch with copper cord.

On a panel of white cs slightly smaller than the card base, I stamped the sentiment in copper, then glued down the pine branch, and slightly popped up the ornament by rolling up little bits of double sided tape - I didn't want it popped as high as foam tape but did want a bit of dimension.

The tails of the cord are poked through a hole behind the branch and taped to the back of the panel.  The panel is popped up on the card base using fun foam.

I absolutely love gilding flakes even though they are incredibly messy and fly all over your craft room.  Here's a close-up showing all the lovely tones of colour and some of the shine:

Head on over to CAS Christmas Card Challenge to see more fabulous inspiration from the Design Team!  The challenge is open until April 24th.  The winner will get to be a future Guest Designer.

  9. This gorgeous ornament makes me want to pull out those gilding flakes and try them again. I didn't get such good results before. If I could make something this pretty, it would be well worth the try! It's so pretty on the shimmery branch too!
