A blog devoted to the cards I make in my tiny upstairs space. When my sister stays there, she calls it an "artist's garret". I'm not an artist, but am an enthusiastic cardmaker - hence the title "Cardmaker's Garret".

Watercoloured Poinsettia

Christmas is fast approaching so the November challenge for CAS Watercolour is here to help you get some cards made.

I have fallen in love with some of Jill Foster's recent techniques.  I love the one (see this video) where she places one of the bold brushstroke stamps in the MISTI, using small ink pads to lay down colour on the stamp and then adding details by watercolouring, and another one (this video) where she colours the stamp while in the MISTI, then going over it with Versamark and clear embossing powder so that it is really easy to do either a watercolour wash or sponged background.

I combined the two and created this card:

I inked up the poinsettia with mini Distress inks, spritzed with a bit of water, and stamped, then watercoloured on top to blend the colours, paint in the veins, etc.

When dry, I inked up the poinsettia with Versamark and heat embossed with clear embossing powder.  I was then able to do my watercolour wash background without worrying about making the poinsettia colours run.

I added a heat embossed sentiment and some splatter, and popped the panel up on fun foam.

Please come and join us at CAS Watercolour.  Since Christmas cards are my favourite cards to make, I'm looking forward to seeing all your cards!

Stamps - Penny Black poinsettia, Paper Smooches sentiment

  1. Beautiful card combining two different ways shown by Jill. I do love this image and yours is so bright and beautiful. The veins add a lot of interest ... great job hand painting those. xx

  2. I Love how your watercolour techniques turned out, Susan. I am such a fan of Jill's techniques and videos too. I have yet to try the heat EB with clear EB powder to seal in and image and keep it safe from watercolour washing and splattering:-) Such a great idea. TFS your beauty my friend and giving a detailed description. Hugs

  3. Wow! Love this rich red! The clear embossing is a great idea when using the red because it will run. You got a clean and clear wash! Lovely, mf!

  4. Oh my gosh! I just finished using this stamp and I have no idea how you got any distinction in the petals much less the veins! I got a blob with the wet technique and ended up having to stamp in vanilla and pencil color it drawing in the details. You even managed to keep the petals separated! This is fabulous Susan and I want lessons on this! Yours turned out spectacularly!
