A blog devoted to the cards I make in my tiny upstairs space. When my sister stays there, she calls it an "artist's garret". I'm not an artist, but am an enthusiastic cardmaker - hence the title "Cardmaker's Garret".

Grand Canyon Bird

Carrying on with Christmas cards, I've got a beautiful bird inspired by the colours of the Grand Canyon.

SCS's CAS Challenge this week is called "The Grand Canyon".  I've only visited the Grand Canyon once and I was astounded by the colours - so different to all the greens of the Pacific Northwest where I live.

I wanted to refresh my memory of the exact colours so found this image on line and used the colours in it to colour my bird:

I coloured the bird with pencils and gamsol, then framed it and added it to an embossed background so that I could enter it in the Less is More challenge "Dry Embossing".

They stressed that the dry embossing should ideally only cover a small portion of the card around the focal point.

I'm so happy to be getting Christmas cards made!  And right now it's easy as we've had snow so I feel quite inspired!

Stamps - Serendipity bird, Penny Black sentiment
Ink - Memento Rich Cocoa
Paper - white cs
Size - A2
Accessories - coloured pencils, Gamsol, Crafts Too embossing folder, MFT pierced frame die

  1. Gorgeous Canyon Wren, Susan. We have only been the Grand Canyon once, also, but have done lots of backpacks in the Southern Utah Red Rock desert. We have heard the wrens singing, which is even more beautiful than you can image. TFS your beautiful Christmas card with the wonderful dry embossed background and beautifully colored wren. Hugs.

  2. You really captured the Grand Canyon colors on this pretty bird, Susan! He looks all warm, fluffy and ready for the snow!

  3. Beautiful pencil coloring of the bird, Susan! I do see the colors of the Grand Canyon in the bird. I love that you chose white all for the pierced frame, the dry embossed panel, and the card base! Hideko xx

  4. Wonderful colouring of your bird. Looking forward to learning this technique from you!! Love how you've dry embossed the background and then added a stitched border over top. Great design, Susan! xx

  5. Fabulous inspiration with that wonderful photo and you've captured the colours beautifully. Love the way you've framed that pretty image with the dry embossing x

  6. Beautiful card, Susan. I can see the Grand Canyon inspiration in your wonderfully coloured bird. Love the subtle embossed background and the frame design. Thank you for joining us at Less is More. xx

  7. What a terrific inspiration for colouring your bird and the shades are just gorgeous Susan. The prettily embossed frame really finishes this super card of perfectly. Thank you so much for sharing this with us at Less is More xx
