A blog devoted to the cards I make in my tiny upstairs space. When my sister stays there, she calls it an "artist's garret". I'm not an artist, but am an enthusiastic cardmaker - hence the title "Cardmaker's Garret".

Gentle Christmas and Floral Thanks

For the Cut It Up challenge, we have to use a die cut and our favourite colour.  Mine is blue.  I have a friend whose husband just passed away so I need to send her a different kind of Christmas card.  "Merry Christmas" won't really apply for her first Christmas on her own.  So I made this:

I created a faux mother of pearl background with blue Distress inks and silver paint, laid the die cut over it, stamped and heat embossed the sentiment.  I like this sentiment for people who aren't going to be enjoying their first Christmas after a major loss.

I've also got a thank you card today for The Flower Challenge "Thanks".  And for the Sisterhood of Crafters "Thanks".

I created a background using various light greens and blues of Distress Oxide inks.  Then stamped and heat embossed the flowers in white, and painted them dark blue.  Trimmed the panel and put it on an embossed layer.

  2. Two gorgeous cards Susan! LOVE the beautiful faux mother-of-pearl background for your first one. I struggle with writing Christmas cards to those that have a recent loss, and this sentiment really is perfect for that. Beautiful second card. Love the gorgeous shades of green for your background with you pretty blue flowers. Great work!! xx

  6. Susan, both cards are so lovely. The faux mother of pearl background behind the die cut scene is beautiful and the sentiment to touching, obviously perfect for your friend after losing her husband. And the second card, with your beautiful watercoloring and choices of colors, is gorgeous. Love every bit of it. Thank you so much for joining in at The Flower Challenge this month and I hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving!

  8. I love the faux mother of pearl background using silver paint and ink in that pretty blue Susan, and the deer in the forest die cut looks great over the top. The thank you card looks terrific too using these lovely flowers over a smooshed green background, and a super embossing folder layer behind that..two wonderful cards. x
